Librarians and library employees with policy making responsibilities are encouraged to attend. Abstract: Terms like "Cloud Computing" are increasingly bandied about within library technology circles without being well-defined or well-understood in the library context. This workshop will cover what is meant by cloud computing in libraries and will discuss some of the pros and cons of implementing cloud-based solutions. Portions of this workshop will focus on the follow topics involving cloud computing in libraries: Defining the cloud and how it pertains to libraries Professional ethics and the cloud Patron privacy and cloud computing Budgetary issues related to cloud computing International aspects of cloud computing Cloud computing and library vendors Library and information science education and Cloud Computing Other elements of cloud computing specific to the library context The aim of this workshop is to provide attendees with a better understanding of cloud computing in the library environment. The workshop organizers will provide a brief introduction to each of the topics, followed by ample time for a group discussion and brainstorming. Attendees will also be encouraged to share their experiences, both positive and negative, implementing cloud computing at their libraries. Workshop Outcomes: Attendees will gain a balanced understanding of cloud computing, its pros and cons, and its real potentials for use in the library context. Attendees will have an increased understanding of how to evaluate cloud-based infrastructures, platforms, and software for their library. Attendees will become aware of real-world uses of cloud computing in libraries, and will have the opportunity to network with other interested attendees on the topic of implementing cloud-based solutions in libraries.
